How Can a Digital Forensics Expert Help You Win Your Court Case?
A digital forensics expert can provide instrumental help and analysis with digital data that has the potential to change the outcome of a court case.
First, the digital forensics analyst will create a forensic image of the device. This image is a 100% exact match and read-only copy of the data on the device. Using a forensic image as opposed to the original device enables the forensic analyst to preserve the integrity of the data. It is also makes it possible for any findings to be admissible in court.
Next, the forensics analyst will identify and analyze all data from the forensic image. The analyst uses specialized tools and software that is typically only available to law enforcement personnel, federal agencies, and digital forensics investigators.
The forensics examiner will investigate data that is not readily visible to a device user or system. In addition to finding information and evidence related to the investigation, the forensics analyst will look for meta-data, hidden files, encrypted or password-protected files, and deleted information. If incriminating evidence was deleted, the forensics analyst may still be able to fully or partially recover the deleted data.
Lastly, the forensic analyst will gather all of the data that was identified, collected, and analyzed, and turn it into an easy to understand, court-ready report. The analyst carefully documents all findings and adheres to proper chain of custody reporting and evidence handling procedures. Each digital forensics report is customized to the court case or client. It is designed to meet the client’s needs, close information gaps, and answer specific questions.
