What is a Computer Forensics Examination?
In a forensic computer examination, we first create a forensic image of the computer, hard drive, or laptop. This enables us to produce evidence that is legally admissible in a court case. The forensic image is a read-only, exact copy of all the data, including the unused and un-allocated space on the device.
We analyze the forensic image, not the original device. This is done to preserve the integrity of the data in its unaltered state and to ensure that no changes are made during the investigation.
During the forensic investigation, we identify, recover, collect, and preserve all data on the computer, including data that is not readily visible to a user or computer system. We do this using powerful digital forensics tools, including the AccessData Forensic Toolkit (FTK), the Cellebrite UFED tool suite, and Oxygen Forensics.
Using these tools, along with our advanced technical expertise and decades of experience, we investigate special areas of the computer, including the computer settings, programs, and application data. We also recover all data on the device, including metadata, deleted data, and hidden folders and files.
Once all the data is identified and collected, we analyze the data using highly specialized forensic tools and software. We look at the computer system, content, and structure as a whole and in the context of the investigation.
Lastly, we present the data and analysis in a court-ready detailed report. The entire process is meticulously recorded and documented. We adhere to the digital forensics examination and reporting guidelines set forth by the National Institute of Justice, and we follow chain of custody standards for handling evidence. Every digital forensics case is handled with the utmost integrity.
